Short answer: The largest and most rigorous trial to date — VITAL, ~25,900 adults, 5.3 years — found that daily omega-3 supplementation did not significantly lower the overall combined rate of major cardiovascular events in the general population. But as a secondary finding, it was linked to a 28% lower risk of heart attack and a 50% lower risk of fatal heart attack, with the clearest benefit in people who ate little fish to begin with. A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 trials (127,000+ participants) found a modest overall reduction in heart attack and coronary death risk, though not in stroke risk. For brain function, the evidence is weaker: most controlled trials in healthy or older adults show mixed or no measurable cognitive benefit from supplementation, even though DHA is a genuine structural building block of brain cell membranes.

Who sees the clearest benefit: People who already eat fish 2+ times a week get comparatively little added benefit from a supplement, according to VITAL’s subgroup data. People who rarely eat fish, and specifically people already managing elevated triglycerides, saw the more consistent signal. This is nutritional support, not a substitute for prescribed heart medication or a cardiologist’s care.

What people usually search for, and what the evidence actually says

Common claimWhat the research shows
“Omega-3 prevents heart attacks and strokes”Not as a blanket claim. VITAL found no significant reduction in the combined primary CVD endpoint for the general population; the heart-attack-specific reduction was a secondary finding, and stroke risk was not reduced in the 2024 meta-analysis.
“Omega-3 lowers heart attack risk”Reasonably supported for people with low baseline fish intake — 28% relative reduction in VITAL’s subgroup, 50% for fatal heart attack specifically.
“Omega-3 sharpens memory and brain function”Not well supported in controlled trials for healthy or older adults — a 2-year placebo-controlled study in people at elevated Alzheimer’s risk found no measurable improvement in memory or cognition.
“Omega-3 is safe to take daily”Well supported — VITAL reported no increase in bleeding or GI side effects versus placebo at the studied dose (1g/day EPA+DHA).

Why the form of omega-3 matters (TGN vs. EE)

Most concentrated fish oil on the market uses the ethyl ester (EE) form, because it’s cheaper to produce at scale. NNP’s Omega-3 uses the triglyceride (TGN) form instead — fatty acids re-attached to a glycerol backbone, closer to how omega-3 naturally occurs in fish. This costs more to produce but is generally considered easier for the body to absorb than EE. We cover the sourcing and manufacturing side of this in more depth in our article on EPAX and TGN processing, including the specific purity and concentration standards NNP’s supplier meets. For the eye-health angle specifically (and why the popular “fish oil cures dry eye” claim doesn’t hold up as well as people think), see Does Omega-3 Fish Oil Actually Help Your Eyes?

What’s actually in the NNP formula

NNP EPAX Omega-3 Fish Oil is sourced from EPAX, a Norwegian supplier, in TGN form, at 120 capsules per bottle (suggested use: 2–4 capsules daily after meals). The product is manufactured under HACCP-certified processes, uses non-GMO ingredients, and is regularly tested for heavy metals and environmental contaminants. It’s registered under Health Canada’s Natural Health Product framework, which requires the product to match its label claims and pass a safety and quality review before sale.

FAQ

Does fish oil actually prevent heart attacks?
The evidence is more nuanced than a flat yes or no. The largest trial (VITAL) didn’t find an overall reduction in combined major cardiovascular events, but did find a meaningful reduction specifically in heart attack risk, especially for people who don’t eat much fish.

Do I still need omega-3 supplements if I already eat fish regularly?
Based on VITAL’s subgroup data, people already eating fish 2+ times a week saw less additional benefit from supplementation than people with low baseline fish intake. If you eat fatty fish regularly, a supplement is likely to add less than it would for someone who doesn’t.

Will omega-3 improve my memory or focus?
Current controlled-trial evidence doesn’t reliably support this for a general healthy adult. DHA is a real structural component of brain cell membranes, but that biological fact hasn’t translated into consistent measurable cognitive improvement in trials of supplementation.

Is it safe to take every day, long-term?
At studied doses (around 1g/day combined EPA+DHA), VITAL found no increase in bleeding or gastrointestinal side effects compared to placebo. As with any supplement, check with a doctor if you’re on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.

What’s the difference between this and a prescription fish oil medication?
Some prescription omega-3 products (like purified EPA-only formulations) are studied and dosed as medications for specific, diagnosed conditions under a doctor’s supervision. NNP’s product is a nutritional supplement, not a substitute for prescribed treatment.
